After World War I, the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn became the nation’s busiest commercial canal, which admittedly took an environmental toll on its water. Today it has become one of the nation’s great restorative success stories as there are multiple initiatives underway to increase the water quality of the Gowanus Canal.
